A dormer loft conversion that fits two rooms and a shower room into a standard Bishopston terrace, including a properly soundproofed music room.
The brief
The owners wanted two usable rooms and a shower room in the loft of a normal-sized Victorian terrace in Bishopston (BS7), one of them a music room that wouldn’t carry sound through the rest of the house.
The challenge
Fitting two rooms plus a shower room into a standard terrace roof is tight enough on its own. Add a music room and the real problem becomes sound, keeping it in.
What we did
We soundproofed the music room from the structure outward: thicker acoustic doors, upgraded insulation in the walls, and a built-up floor, extra boarding between the joists to thicken and deaden it, packed with acoustic-rated loft roll. The second room became a light double bedroom under twin rooflights, with a traditional-style shower room off the new landing.
The outcome
Two proper rooms and a shower room where there was only roof space, and a music room you can actually use without the whole house hearing it.
