A rear dormer conversion that turns the roof of a Horfield terrace into a proper double bedroom with a high-spec en-suite and storage built into every spare inch.
The brief
The owners of a terraced house in Horfield (BS7) wanted to make real use of their loft, a comfortable double bedroom with its own en-suite bathroom, and as much built-in storage as the space could give them.
The challenge
In a standard terrace roof, floor space and headroom are limited and the sloping eaves eat into the room. The trick is squeezing in a full en-suite and generous storage without the bedroom feeling cramped, using the awkward low corners instead of losing them.
What we did
We built a rear dormer to open up the headroom, then fitted the room out properly: a run of built-in wardrobes with hanging rails, shelves and pull-out drawers, plus storage tucked into the eaves and above the stairwell. The en-suite is a high-spec finish, a walk-in shower with blue metro tiles, a vanity unit and shelving set into the eaves for towels, lit by a rooflight over the WC.
The outcome
A bright double bedroom with its own en-suite shower room and more storage than most main bedrooms, all worked out of what used to be empty roof space, reached by a new staircase.
