A skylight loft conversion in a Montpellier conservation area, where a dormer wasn’t allowed, so we turned a big roof into a light, airy room full of roof windows, bespoke ply furniture and refurbished Victorian doors.

The brief

The owners of this Victorian terrace in Montpellier (BS6) had a large, unused roof space and wanted to turn it into a proper double bedroom with an en-suite, a calm, light-filled room that felt in keeping with the period character of the house.

The challenge

The house sits in a conservation area, so a dormer was off the table, no box built out of the back to win extra headroom and floor area. Everything had to be achieved within the existing roofline, working with the shape of the roof rather than changing it from outside.

What we did

The roof was large to begin with, so instead of a dormer we filled it with light. We fitted multiple roof windows and skylights to make the room feel open and airy, and built in bespoke plywood furniture, drawers, shelving and storage worked into the stairs and the room itself to make the most of the sloping eaves. Refurbished Victorian doors keep the period feel, and the original wooden floorboards were painted white to bounce the light around.

The outcome

A bright, characterful loft that respects the conservation area, no dormer needed. The white-painted natural wood floor, the roof windows and the bespoke ply give the room a unique feel that looks really light and airy, and adds a full double bedroom and en-suite to the house.

  • Joe and his team did a great job on our loft conversion and 1st floor renovations. Our conversion came with the added complexity of lowering the first-floor ceilings to create enough space for the loft, but Joe took it all in his stride.Throughout the build, Joe was incredibly accommodating when we asked to include additional work, seemingly unfazed by any request and capable of making it a reality.
